How testing may inform your options
Inherited and tumour testing can identify features that guide treatment decisions and highlight relevant clinical trials — though results don't always lead to changes in treatment.

Common questions
How do I know which type of testing I've had?
Your results letter or oncology team can confirm this. Inherited tests are usually arranged through a genetics clinic or oncology referral; tumour tests are often done on biopsy tissue and ordered by your oncologist.
Can I access testing if I haven't been referred?
In some cases. Independent providers offer tests without a clinical referral, though results are most useful when discussed with your care team. Testing through a clinical trial is also possible and is usually free.
Does a negative result mean testing wasn't useful?
No. A negative inherited test doesn't rule out somatic (tumour-level) mutations, and vice versa. Both types provide different information and negative results still contribute to clinical decision-making.
